His plane touched down in St. Louis. He offered his best smile to the flight attendant as he deplaned. It was winter, that fact did not go unnoticed even in the confines of the runway as he walked from airplane to terminal. He scanned the crowd, always watchful as he walked toward the baggage claim area.

He spotted her immediately. Despite her height, or lack of it as was the case, she stood out in a crowd. He smiled, this one genuine and one reserved only for her. He really was glad to see her. It'd been too long.

He wondered if she realized the effect she had on people. They gave her a wide berth, probably without realizing they were doing it. It wasn't fear exactly. He didn't think it had anything to do with her picture being plastered in newspapers across the country over and over again either. She just demanded respect and had a presence that reflected she wasn't someone to be messed with or hassled.

He'd helped hone that look. He'd taken a basic innocent (though some might argue whether a necromancer was an innocent) and made her into his protégé. She'd exceeded his wildest expectations for her by far. It was in her to begin with, he hadn't done anything she didn't already have the wherewithal to do. He wouldn't have been able to help meld her into what she was today without it. A killing machine. The preternatural world feared her despite the fact they could outmuscle her from here to Europe and back. She had clout as leader of a misfit pard of leopards and as mistress to the Master of the City.

It helped that her word was gold. If she said she'd do something or protect someone, she'd die trying to see it got done. Not too many people were like that, even Edward could respect that about her. Anita said what she meant and meant what she said.

He hadn't seen her since Albuquerque. He'd had no reason to. He cared about her in a way he couldn't quite identify and needed to stay away. It wasn't romantic but it was more than friendship. Kindred souls. He'd meant what he said to Olaf about soul mates and Anita being his. Two halves of the same whole.

He should feel bad he supposed, that he'd taken her out of her world and brought her knee deep into his. He could probably blame himself for the fact she was involved quite personally with the monsters he hunted without remorse. They weren't supposed to get involved with that which they hunted.

There was no sense, though, in feeling guilt or regret. If he asked her if she forgave him, she'd say yes. He knew that despite seeing regret in her eyes once in a while. He doubted she'd go back to where she was when he'd found her.

And for that he knew he was absolved of any wrongdoing in the making of Anita Blake into what she was today.

~The End~

Great little bit of Edward insight. I adore this fandom even if the canon is crap. Just glad those characters exist so we can use them to their full potential! But I like this. I don't think he has much to apologize for, though--his guilt is misplaced. She'd apologize to him for crossing sides if pressed even though she'd defend her position (no pun intended) ad nauseum if pressed, too.
Glad to find you--with Firefly, Heroes and Anita, too!? All you're missing for me is Doctor Who :-)

Thank you! It was fun to write him. I've been so disappointed at the lack of Edward in the books since Obsidian Butterfly. I'm a couple behind now. While I enjoy what LKH is making Anita into, the ride hasn't been a fun one LOL but I will keep reading.

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it and that you found me :-) I have Dr. Who S1 in my Netflix queue coming up, so you never know you may see some show up.

Yay! I have yet to finish Danse Macabre and have only fondled Harlequin and am way behind with the Fairy series--and dh just showed me last week that she's a new, third, series in the sci-fi realm. Hmmm. Have you been to Pomme de Sang? It used to be a home away from home :-) ABVH was my second fandom ever and I am forever fond.
Anyway I think there's a dearth of Edward because LKH is determined to keep them out of bed. It would be hard to stop those two from hooking up because it just makes sense. I'll be spamming you with comments. :-)

Spam away. If I'm slow, bear with me, it's nothing personal just got a lot on my plate at home so I'm not haunting LJ like I normally do.

And, yes, I understand what you're saying about Edward, it does make sense. Not to mention, I have to wonder what he'd think of what's going on with her at this point. I don't know.

Do you read Merry Gentry at all? I don't enjoy those books nearly as well as Anita Blake because they're so steeped in sex with so little plot. I tore through Anita Blake up until Obsidian Butterfly, then after that I've taken forever to stay current. And I think that's why, sex with so little plot. I liked her RPIT dealings, I liked the Animator, Inc. stuff and that seems to have gone by the wayside for the most part.

But I'll keep reading, because I do enjoy the world and I'm attached enough to Anita at this point I want to finish the ride and see where it leads us.
